Democratic Russia Committee, Institute of Modern Russia and “Dare to Speak” Productions present a UNIQUE ten-day event at the Gene Frankel theatre in downtown New York City, that will involve performances of a controversial play based on the Moscow theatre siege, screenings of a banned documentary film ‘Blowing up Russia’ and Q and A sessions with experts on submarine Kursk sinking, Beslan siege, apartment building explosions, and Nord Ost siege.

DARE TO SPEAK PRODUCTIONS is pleased to announce the World Premiere production of I PLEAD GUILTY, written and directed by Natalia Pelevine, based on the real events of the Moscow theatre siege of 2002. It is adapted from Pelevine’s play In Your Hands, which, after a successful London run, was translated into Russian and banned there by the government officials after just one performance. I PLEAD GUILTY will play a limited engagement at Gene Frankel Theater, (24 Bond Street, New York, NY 10012). Performances begin Wednesday, May 18 and continue through Sunday, May 29. Opening Night is Friday, May 20 (7:30 p.m.).
Eight hours into the siege of a theatre, Islamic terrorists have taken the audience hostage, demanding for troops to be pulled out of their land. They insist that if this does not happen, the government will have the blood of many on their hands.
In this midst of this horror, an interaction occurs between two women, the journalist, Natasha, and black widow terrorist, Seda. Their relationship, tense, difficult, and dangerous takes an unforeseen turn, when Seda, removes her veil and reveals her personal story to Natasha whose life is in her hands. In disbelief and agonizing circumstances, the two women are stripped of their roles as victim and villain, and are simply that- women.
The production features scenic design by Jane Stein, lighting design by Jeff Nash and Catriona Rubenis-Stevens is the stage manager and producer.

Plastic Flowers Dancing in Russia’s Backyard- Tajikistan
This project explores modern Tajikistan, a place unknown to many people and forgotten by the media after their civil war ended. Being at the crossroads in Central Asia bordering China, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan, it is the poorest former Soviet republic. In
it’s eastern mountains, the second highest in the world, in the Gordno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO), which cover almost half of Tajik territory and contain only three percent of the population, live the Pamiri. They have retained their distinctive culture and in many ways remain autonomous from mainstream Tajikistan.
